IF you owned a Sony Trinitron TV during the 70s and 80s then you really had something to brag about as it was a top of the range television set. This 1976 advert boasts about its colour and brightness superiority.
Back in 1976, black & white television sets were a popular cheaper option: the Sony Trinitron would cost around £325 whereas a black & white TV would be about £140 – bear in mind that the average weekly salary back then was around £70 (men) and £45 (women).
The Trinitron was the Rolls Royce of television sets, so if you had one you gained permission to brag; a conversation with your neighbour could have sounded something like this:
Neighbour: “I have a Philips TV.”
You: “Nice… but I have a Sony Trinitron.“
Game over.

We never had a Sony Triniton TV which isn’t surprising as we never had top of the range anything! My parents didn’t believe in upgrading or replacing anything that was still in good working order. We still used the very first TV set my parents bought in the seventies until the early nineties – no joke! And we’d still be using it had it not packed up. So I had serious envy of other people’s state-of-the-art electricals!
Your parents sound like my parents 🙂 I think it’s the way the older generation thought: if it’s not broken, then why fix or replace. Yep, I also had serious envy of other people’s upgrades. You may have guessed that we never had a Sony Trinitron. Thanks for your comment 🙂
