IN 1987, I had a part-time job at the in-store bakery – this was the start of a number of funny business scenarios whilst working in a food preparation area. There were many funny business events, but here are my top three:
Funny business #1: A guy and girl have a bit of rumpy pompy at the back of the in-store bakery. He boasts to the other colleagues about his conquest, she hears about his boasting and goes after him with a knife.
Funny business #2: My colleague looks mortified when returning from the back of the bakery. “What’s wrong?” – “I just saw him with his willy out having a wee in the sink!”
Funny business #3: Noticing a trend that the two girls I worked with acted rather rowdily after 3pm on Saturdays, I wanted to get to the bottom of this behavioural change. The culprit was a bottle of Thunderbird that was swigged behind the high-stacked bags of breadmaking flour. I soon joined in with the Thunderbird swigging and we became a trio of rowdy drunkards at work.
The three memorable funny business occurrences took place in the 1980s, and luckily, everyone involved kept their jobs. I have to admit, even though the funny business events were funny at the time, I’d rather work in a calmer environment: my ideal would be working alongside Delia in her kitchen. I’ve always admired her calmness in the kitchen. I grew-up watching Delia knock-up lots of delightful looking food, and not once was there a hint of any funny business: no rumpy pompy, no threatening knife wielding, no drunk behaviour, and I really couldn’t imagine her having a quick wee on the worktop whilst the cameras focused elsewhere. Delia’s kitchen is also free-from Pyrex dish hurling, Creda oven-door slamming and wooden spoon hurling – the perfect food preparation environment to work in.
I can hear some of you saying, “Ahh, wait a minute, in 2005 Delia was drunk and made a drunken outburst at a football match!” My reply: 1) Delia denied that she was drunk and she’s not a liar, 2) Her passionate speech was outside the kitchen walls, and 3) It was in 2005, get over it!

Remember when Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks threw their weight around the wrestling ring? A time when the Milk Tray Man secretly delivered chocolates. This made me laugh, particularly the thought of Delia weeing in the sink. I’m sure she’s always perfectly behaved 😉
I’m glad it made you laugh and thanks for your comment 😀. Yes, I’m sure Delia is perfectly behaved .. most of the time😉
